A radiant textile bursting with vivid hues and intricate patterns, wax fabric is instantly recognizable. Born from a rich history of cultural blending, its roots lie in Indonesian batik—a wax-resist dyeing technique—before evolving into an emblematic fabric of the African continent. Over time, wax has crossed borders and generations, finding its place in wardrobes and interiors around the world. Garments, accessories, home décor: wax has become a global visual language.
In the Wonder Wax exhibition, couture designer Sylvie Kameni pays tribute to this fabric of many faces. Trained in Parisian haute couture, she brings together the elegance of refined cuts with the expressive power of bold prints. Her creations embody a unique dialogue between the precision of luxury craftsmanship and the vibrant immediacy of popular art—a meeting of meticulous technique and an explosion of colour.
Wonder Wax is also a collective adventure. To enrich this encounter between tradition and innovation, Sylvie Kameni has invited two fellow artisan designers who share her passion for material and colour. Julie Lecoeur, a paper flower artist, reinterprets wax patterns with striking stylisation, blending them with the delicacy of the botanical world. Wendy Letellier, a master upholsterer, reinvents traditional Western furniture by dressing chairs and armchairs in wax fabrics—a bold and sensitive act of cultural fusion. Both are members of the French Confederation of Artisan Trades (CFMA).
This exhibition is a vibrant ode to colour, craftsmanship, creativity, and plural identities.
Free entry – On view until 5 September 2025.
Located in the heart of the Faubourg Saint-Honoré district—epicentre of luxury and savoir-faire—Sofitel Paris Le Faubourg shines a spotlight on French craftsmanship and artistic creativity, celebrating one-of-a-kind, handmade pieces through a fascinating dialogue between heritage and modernity.
Born in Cameroon, Sylvie Kameni discovered her passion for fashion at an early age. She devoted herself entirely to the field, eventually earning the prestigious title of Master Artisan in Couture. After collaborating with the house of Sonia Rykiel, she was commissioned to design menswear for the opening ceremony of the 1998 FIFA World Cup at the Palais du Pharo in Marseille.
Building on these formative experiences, she opened her own couture studio in central Marseille, where she has been designing unique pieces for over twenty years—each blending precision, boldness, and elegance. What she values most in her work is the human connection: that shared creative moment with each client when a dream becomes reality, through a gown that enhances personality, figure, and skin tone.
Since 2013, she has been a member of the Paris Federation of Custom Couture. Her work is regularly exhibited in prestigious venues, including Sofitel Paris Le Faubourg, where her pieces—infused with both artisanal tradition and modern flair—draw particular attention.
